Dive into Immersive Learning: A Primer for Meeting Professionals

When we have these experiences, distractions fall away. We’re fully focused and in the now. We’ve reached that happy place positive psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls “flow.” Yet in our increasingly distracted world, flow has never been harder to achieve. According to Porter Stowell, who heads up IBM’s serious games initiatives, 66% of workers are overwhelmed, he explained, citing a 2014 Deloitte study of global human capital trends. (To which some will say, only half-jokingly, “What, only five!?”) Using these dysfunctions as a framework, I’ll profile corresponding teambuilding exercises to turn that dysfunction into engaging, purposeful function. 1. Absence of Trust We know trust is the cornerstone of solid teams. Ropes courses are classic, often-used and perhaps now-tired ways to instill team trust. Want something fresh—and essentially free? As a busy professional, with the majority of your work time spent in groups, you can learn 10 easy ways to host and contribute to more productive team meetings: Be a know it all It’s natural to disengage when meeting content isn’t relevant. The most effective meeting hosts review all potential agenda segments to determine whether they apply to all attendees. If participants already know a particular content slice, then simply don’t cover that segment for the broader audience. Or if you have vastly different levels of awareness in the room, divide people accordingly to ensure maximum relevance for all. No problem? No meeting! The UN-Fam Fam: How a “Discovery Tour” goes beyond showing off a property to educate and inspire

Yet with so much on your plate, can you really justify being out of the office for a day or more to visit on a fam (familiarization) tour? And as virtual reality tools begin to make visiting from our desks just about as real as visiting in person, I believe the fam tour must evolve. To stay ahead of the curve, the team at Suncadia Resort near Seattle decided to elevate the experience of the traditional “fam” tour and turn it into a content-driven, experiential Discovery Tour. –> Or what we can call the Unfam Fam. What’s the BIG Idea??

Within moments of beginning TED Active in Whistler BC, I began what will ultimately be a full week of learning and generating provocative new ideas, and novel ways to help you generate more OF them at your meetings and FOR your meetings. To wit: this enormous outdoor sculpture, just dedicated two nights ago above the Vancouver Convention Centre, where TED will take place. Beyond serving as a thing of beauty, “Unnnumbered Sparks” (the idea for which was conceived at a previous TED event) allows anyone to affect it by logging into the sculpture’s wireless network and contributing to the art form with their designs. It also represents the capacity for an idea to change as more people add to it. Very TED-like in and of itself. Without installing a massive art piece (!), there are endless ways to help your meeting participants foster more and better ideas through the way you design your events. Just a few: Simply giving people a large wall on which they can share their input over the course of a meeting goes a long way. Part II: Engaging the Invisible Attendee after an Event: How to communicate key messages—even when you’re not meeting face-to-face

Last week, I wrote about how to engage “invisible” attendees in virtual events–before and during the gathering. But we’re not done yet. There are actions you can take, and SHOULD take, after an event to continue the engagement and build value and buzz into the future. AFTER an event, keep the engagement going: Ensure results don’t end when the live event ends. Afterwards, hold virtual meet-ups online (via Google Hangouts, TweetUps, etc.), so real and virtual attendees continue to connect, learn and network. Engaging the Invisible Attendee: How to communicate key messages—even when you’re not meeting face-to-face

Engaging meeting attendees—live and in person—is challenging enough. Engaging participants we can’t even see—the virtual attendee—may appear even harder. And given how distracted meeting goers are these days, you’d think everyone is “invisible,” with heads buried in their phones and tablet screens rather than engaged in content on the large screen at the front of the room! Know this: the better we are as meeting professionals at connecting with “invisible” attendees, the more our meetings engage everyone, whether they participate in person or virtually. A surprising inspiration for “winning over” the invisible attendee? Television. With smart phones and tablets becoming as common as TVs, we’ve entered the era of “social television.” And I am not referring here to reruns of “Friends.” In fact, you have socialized with your TV if you’ve ever watched a favorite show, sporting event, video game or political event while Tweeting, Facebooking or texting to share the experience with others. This one question elevates and disciplines event design. It also generates engagement tools that are exceptionally suited for building more meaningful connections among participants and delivering content that makes long-term impacts.
